Leo Chiu
Leo Chiu founded Apptera in 2001 and today serves as a member of the Advisory Board. Chiu was the lead architect of the Yodlee Voice Access System where he collaborated with Nuance, SpeechWorks, Lucent, IBM, Tellme and BeVocal to design and develop a vendor-independent VoiceXML rendering engine that could retrieve personal financial information by simply speaking and listening through any telephone.
In 1999, Chiu served as the chief engineer for ineed.com, an e-commerce company, where he became a patent-holder for instant messaging technologies. Prior to ineed.com, Chiu joined Niku as the lead engineer and founding team member for the IT portal powerhouse. Previously, Chiu joined Oracle Corporation for four years and was named as one of five strategic IT consultants to help complete the British Interactive Broadcast (BIB) project in the U.K.
Chiu received his B.S. in Statistics and Computer Science from Brigham Young University and his M. S. in Operations Research and Engineering Economic Systems from Stanford University.
Barry Gilbert
Barry Gilbert has become one of retail's most seasoned and versatile leaders. Gilbert was former CEO of the premier, multi-channel retailer of outdoor products, Smith & Hawken. Prior to Smith & Hawken, Gilbert served as Chairman and CEO of luxury goods retailer, Miadora, an internet venture backed by Sequoia Capital.
Previously, Gilbert served as COO and Vice Chairman of The Sharper Image. He presided over the emergence of the company's internet business, operations and merchandising. From 1996-1999, Sharper Image stock grew four-fold. In 1990, Gilbert led the rollout of retail entertainment stores for Warner Bros. Studio Stores (WBSS). As head of WBSS International, he brought Warner Bros. Stores to markets as diverse as Japan, Australia and the Middle East.
Early on, Gilbert held merchandising and operational positions for both May and Federated Department Stores. He earned a B.A. and MBA from the University of California at Berkeley and today serves as a Director for Reading Revolution, Inc., Informative, Inc. and The Santa Clara University Retail Management Institute.
Debbie Baldini
Debbie Baldini has served as the Managing Director, Retail Practice with Freeborders since its inception in 1999. Prior to Freeborders, she held a variety of senior level management positions in multi-billion dollar global companies, including Levi Strauss & Company.

Dr. Thomas B. Schalk
Dr. Thomas B. Schalk is Vice President, Voice Technology at ATX, a leading telematics service provider with customers that include Mercedes-Benz and BMW. Dr. Schalk is responsible for guiding ATX¼s voice technology vision. He leads a speech group that focuses on developing vehicle-based speech interfaces that optimize user experience while minimizing driver distraction. Recognized as one of the top ten most influential leaders in the speech recognition industry by Speech Technology Magazine and author of the book, Speech Recognition: The Most Complete Practical Reference Guide, Schalk developed the technology used in the first speech recognition product offered by Texas Instruments in the early 1980s.
Dr. Schalk received his Ph.D. from the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine where he studied Auditory Physiology and a B.S. degree in Electrical Engineering from George Washington University. He holds numerous key patents in the areas of speech technology and speech applications including: voice activated dialing, speaker verification, barge-in, automotive speech control, speech-enabled account access, high noise speech recognition, and speech database reduction techniques. He is considered an expert in acoustics and multi-modal interface design.
Prior to joining ATX, Dr. Schalk was the CTO of Philips Speech Processing, and the CTO of Voice Control Systems. He has over twenty years of experience in the speech recognition industry and is also past president of the Applied Voice Input/Output Society.
Ira Rimerman
Ira Rimerman is currently a partner in RSA Ventures, a new ventures advisory and investment group. Rimerman joined Citibank in 1971 as a data processing professional after a series of technical and data processing positions with firms such as ITT and The Computer Usage Company. He was chief financial officer for one of the bank's subsidiaries in Columbus, Ohio. Rimerman was assigned to head the bank's Urban Affairs Department's Economic Development Center, gaining valuable experience in lending and credit. Rimerman later joined the bank's New York Banking Group as chief of staff to the group head. In 1976, he left for Hong Kong, where he was responsible for Citibank's area consumer business. He later returned to the U.S., where he was selected to lead the bank's MasterCard and Visa business.
Rimerman was division head of Citibank USA, turning around a business that lost $100MM after tax into the biggest earner in Citibank. In 1985, he became group executive for Citibank's Consumer Services Group-International. In 1987 he returned to U.S. Card Products as group executive and later assumed administrative responsibility for the Chairman's office.
Rimerman served as a director of The Wharton Graduate Executive Board, University of Pennsylvania, from 1989-1995 and was a director of The Wharton Entrepreneurial Center from 1986-1990. He received an MBA from Wharton, University of Pennsylvania. He is listed in Who's Who in America, and was chosen as a Letter Winner of Distinction recipient by the Syracuse University Athletic Department.
Don Hollis
Don Hollis is president of DRH Strategic Consulting, Inc. which assists clients in developing strategies for leveraging technology as well as evaluating acquisitions. His clients have included NCR, Tandem, Unisys, Cash Station, First National Bank of Chicago, S.W.I.F.T., SAIC and others. From 1981-1996, he was an executive vice president of First Chicago Corporation responsible for its technology leadership and commercial transaction processing businesses.
Hollis was a vice president and group executive of Chase Manhattan Bank from 1971-1981. He also served as a director, general manager and COO of Interactive Data Corporation, a Chase subsidiary, and as a director of a number of other technically-based Chase subsidiaries. He was frequently involved in buying and selling IT companies.
Hollis serves on the executive committee of the Illinois Institute of Technology's Board of Trustees and the Board of Trustees of Advocate HealthSystem. Roger O. Goldman
Roger Goldman is an industry consultant and today serves on the board of a number of leading firms. He is a board and audit committee member for American Express Centurion Bank, a U.S. subsidiary of American Express Company, and serves on the advisory board for Cyota Inc. and Emi Financial. From 1997-2000, Goldman was president of Global Sourcing Services LLC in New York, a direct marketing support company, where he grew the company to more than several hundred million dollars in sales and substantial profitability before it was successfully acquired in 2000.
Previously, Goldman was executive vice president of National Westminster Bancorp and head of the Community Banking Group. During his tenure, he was responsible for marketing and distributing financial services to nearly one million customers in New Jersey and metropolitan New York City and vicinities. Additionally, Goldman has held a number of senior banking functions, including a near 15-year tenure at Citicorp/Citibank in New York as well as CEO of a community bank in Northern California.
Goldman has been honored with Humanitarian Awards from the Albert Einstein Medical Center and the Bronx Council of the American Jewish Congress. Today, he is involved in a number of philanthropic efforts and serves as vice chairman of Lighthouse International, a leading international vision rehabilitation agency. Janey A. Place is CEO of DigitalThinking.com, a business strategy, technology, innovation and payment systems consulting company based in New York City.
Prior to 2004, Place was President of Mellon Lab and OnLine Services, and Executive Vice President of Mellon Financial Corporation, responsible for Mellon's business innovation lab, eCommerce strategy, Customer Information Management, enterprise web sites and design services. Art Shaw
Art Shaw was President and CEO of myCFO. Prior to myCFO, Shaw held several senior positions with Charles Schwab, including Senior VP of Electronic Brokerage, General Manager of Schwab's retail mass-market client group and Head of Strategic Planning. He has also held positions domestically and internationally with McKinsey & Co., the management consulting firm, and Chase. Shaw was selected as a Henry R. Luce Scholar and spent a year in Thailand. Byron Reeves
Professor Byron Reeves is director of the Center for the Study of Language and Information (CSLI) and Paul C. Edwards Professor of Communication at Stanford University. He is an internationally recognized expert on the psychological processing of media and technology in the areas of attention, emotions, learning and physiological responses. Reeves is co-author (with Clifford Nass) of "The Media Equation: How People Treat Computers, Television, and New Media Like Real People and Places."
Reeves' research has been the basis for a number of media and interactive voice products for companies such as Microsoft, IBM, General Magic, US West and Hewlett-Packard. He has also consulted with several media organizations, including The Disney Channel, The Advanced Television Test Center, the Federal Communication Commission and Congress. Lynn Wunderman
For the past six years, Lynn Wunderman has served as president and CEO at I-Behavior. Prior to founding I-Behavior, she was a founding partner of Wunderman, Sadh, & Associates, a consulting firm specializing in information-based marketing services for both consumer and business-to-business marketers in the financial services, high-tech, graphic arts, non-profit, package goods and Internet industries.
